Volcan Azul Caturra Natural

Seasonal Series

Hello Caturra,

A vivid expression of Costa Rica’s highlands, this natural-processed Caturra comes from the renowned Volcan Azul, a farm known for generations of quality and innovation.

Managed under meticulous craftsmanship of Alejo Castro, whose family helped shape Costa Rican coffee since the 1800s, this lot highlights the expressive potential of Caturra when cultivated and processed with precision.

In the cup, expect a rich honey-like sweetness, with notes of apricot and prune, balanced by a wine-like acidity, and a sugary, lingering finish. It’s a vibrant yet approachable cup, ideal for those seeking clarity and depth.

About the Coffee

The Producer & Farm

Volcan Azul is a highly respected coffee estate located in Costa Rica’s West Valley, managed by Alejo Castro. Building on a long family tradition in coffee cultivation, Alejo continues to push forward with a strong focus on quality and sustainability.

The family’s journey began in the early 19th century, when Alejo Castro Jiménez and Wilhelm Kahle acquired fertile land in the Central Valley—now known as Hacienda Colima.

Today, Alejo integrates modern practices in soil care, plant health, and processing, positioning Volcan Azul as a leader in environmentally responsible coffee production. Alejo’s dedication to innovation and sustainability continues to drive the farm’s success and sets a standard within the specialty coffee industry.

"I enjoy experimenting with processing and finding exotic and perfectly layered flavors in coffee, but I have learned over the years that the successful experiment is the one that you can repeat which means to understand each step and make it efficient. The rest is a matter of taste preferences. Indeed, there is nothing like a perfectly balanced, bright and sweet coffee that stands out for unique flavors brought by a complexity of the terroir and genetics of the variety with a bit of care and knowledge into the processing."
